There are several reasons Friendship Hospital for Animals may recommend blood work for your pet. Chemistry and hematology blood tests can often detect a disease before your pet displays any symptoms. Early detection and diagnosis of any problems are of great value in our effort to keep your pet safe, happy and healthy.

Routine pet blood work helps detect disease early Our veterinarians may recommend bloodwork for your pet before prescribing certain medications, before anesthetic procedures, if your pet is a senior citizen, or even for your apparently healthy pet if there is suspicion of a problem. These test results will provide both important information about the current status of your pet's health and will allow us to monitor any changes or progressions of disease throughout their life.

Hematology blood tests will reveal what is happening with your pet’s blood cells. Studying hematology results will tell us how well your pet can fight infection, how efficient the blood is in clotting to stop bleeding, and give specifics about blood cells that carry oxygen.

Pet hematology and chemistry results report on organ function, blood sugar and electrolytes Chemistry blood tests focus on your pet’s organ functions, as well as blood sugar and electrolytes. These tests can indicate how well organs like the liver and kidneys are working and how well they will be able to handle medication or anesthesia. Understanding these results and being able to make baseline comparisons enables us to provide solutions to enhance your pet's quality of life and overall health.

Most of these basic tests are able to be performed in-house with same-day results in most cases.  Please feel free to ask one of our team members about any of these tests.
