Titres are a measurement of an animal’s immunity against a specific virus. Here at Friendship Hospital for Animals we discuss checking our older patients at the age of 10 and many of our allergy patients for immunity against distemper and parvoviruses.
To measure the level of protection, a blood sample is drawn, sent to an outside lab and we receive the results within a few days. If the tests determine that your pet has a sufficient protection level, vaccinations against these specific diseases will not be necessary that year. Titres will be checked annually to ensure that protection is adequate.
The goal of checking titres annually is to provide thoughtful medical care by balancing your pet’s susceptibility to these diseases and minimizing the potential risk of overvaccination.
If you have any questions about titres please call to discuss them with one of our team members.
